Gender-Based Violence Against Afro-descendant Women in Latin America (MESECVI, UNFPA, Network of Afro-Latin American, Afro-Caribbean and Diaspora Women, 2025)
Overview
As a result of racial and gender stereotypes, as well as institutional racism, Afro-descendant women are disproportionately exposed to multiple forms of symbolic, physical, psychological, and sexual violence throughout their lives and in all spheres.
This thematic report from the Committee of Experts of the MESECVI, which complements its General Recommendation No. 5, examines international and regional legal frameworks, the specific violence faced by Afro-descendant women, and the intersections with economic and social rights that aggravate their situation.
The document, developed in partnership with the UNFPA Regional Office for Latin America and the Caribbean and the Network of Afro-Latin American, Afro-Caribbean, and Diaspora Women, included consultations with Afro-descendant women’s organizations from various countries in the region, including Mexico, Honduras, Brazil, Bolivia, Panama, Nicaragua, Peru, Uruguay, Chile, and Costa Rica.
